Laura has been the Director of Development and Communications since 2004. She works with the Board of Trustees and President to manage the organization’s development strategy, including fundraising and communications. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Language and Literature from St. Mary’s College of Maryland and an Executive Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Georgetown University’s Public Policy Institute.

Polly Festa, Manager of Livestock and Pastures

Before joining the Accokeek Foundation, Polly Festa had been actively managing livestock for over 15 years. Having been born and raised on Hi Diddle farm near Cooperstown, New York, Polly had many opportunities to show in 4-H at county, state, and regional levels. Her livestock experience also includes breeding various types of cows and goats including Belted Galloways, Scottish Highlands, Jerseys, commercial beef, and meat goats. When she is not working hard for the Accokeek Foundation, she is home with her horse Lady, a Friesian-Morgan cross, and her Brittany Spaniel, aptly named Brittany.

Helen Nelson, Director of Finance

Helen, a Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Maryland, University College, with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management, is also a Certified Public Accountant. She is directly involved with the financial management of all Foundation activities, including accounting and reporting for grants and federal awards.

Wilton Corkern, President and CEO

Wilton has been President and CEO of the Accokeek Foundation, with responsibility for all programs and activities since 1990. He holds a Ph.D. in American Studies from The George Washington University, with concentrations in American Environmental Policy, Historic Preservation, Material Culture, and American Cultural History.

Jose Castillo, Agricultural Coordinator

With a Bachelor of Science in Engineering – Systems of Agricultural Production from San Carlos University in Guatemala, Jose coordinates the Foundation’s efforts to provide outreach and agricultural training to immigrant communities in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area.  Jose also assists with the management of production and farm staff at the Foundation’s Ecosystem Farm.  Jose is a certified contractor, has worked as an English-Spanish Interpreter, and has been an avid beekeeper and bee researcher for thirty years.  Most recently, Jose participated as an apprentice with the Engaged Community Offshoots’ urban agriculture training program.

Colette Buchholtz, Ecosystem Farm Staff

Colette Buchholtz has joined Courtney at the Accokeek Foundation, as a farm apprentice this season. A wildlife biologist by training, Colette has worked as a field technician for the federal government on both wildlife and botanical projects. She has spent the past several years embarking on various agricultural endeavors and is excited to put her knowledge and experience to use on the Ecosystem Farm.

Courtney Buchholtz, Ecosystem Farm Manager

Courtney Buchholtz took on the role of Ecosystem Farm Manager in March, with an adventurous spirit and a passion for growing delicious and wholesome food. Born and raised in Rochester, Minnesota, she has worked on both large- and small-scale agricultural operations, from a diversified 225-member CSA that utilized draft horses as well as tractors to toil in the fields to a one-and-a-half acre farm that she ran for three seasons with her sister, Colette.

Land Conservation Open House

Thursday, September 15–In partnership with Maryland Environmental Trust, the Accokeek Foundation presents this free and open to all event for local landowners and managers interested in learning about the conservation options that are available to them. Presenters will discuss a variety of conservation options from small-scale riparian buffers (CREP) to conservation easements with statewide organizations, and the monetary incentives that many of these programs feature. Doors open at 6:30 pm with presentations beginning at 7:00 pm. There will be an opportunity for guests to meet and talk with presenters immediately following. Light refreshments will be served.
