Ever wonder what the difference between a cow and heifer is?  Here is your chance to find out. This intensive class covers farm jargon and basic animal anatomy and physiology through a combination of classroom and field (barnyard) instruction about the various heritage breeds of  livestock preserved by the Accokeek Foundation: American Milking Devons, Hog Island Sheep, Ossabaw Hogs, Buckeye Chickens, and Black Turkeys.

Please bring a lunch.

A Fungi Foray

This fall, join biologist Tovi Lehmann for a foray into the fascinating world of fungi. In this two-part workshop, Tovi will introduce participants to mushroom life cycles and habitats, as well as the important role that fungi play in the natural world. Tovi will also discuss the basics of mushroom identification. Participants will take a guided trail walk to hunt for fungi. Please wear close-toed shoes and clothing appropriate for the weather.

Pre-registration is required by Thursday, October 4, 2012.

After graduating with a degree in communications from Towson University, Candice recently moved back to her hometown of La Plata, MD. She has a strong passion for sustainable and organic agriculture and honestly thinks there’s no greater feeling than growing her own food. She is excited for this opportunity to be able to learn while working at the Ecosystem Farm this season.

Susan Cook, Ecosystem Farm Apprentice

Susan Cook has spent the last twenty years in the creative field, working variously as an exhibition graphic designer, as an art/creative director for a couple large NY ad agencies, and most recently as creative director at a strategic marketing agency in Chevy Chase, MD. She is now looking to shift her digitally focused life into a more tactile, and grounded endeavor which has lead her to Accokeek. Susan is a graduate of Duke University, B.A. Art.
